Bill Blackbeard: The Collector Who Rescued the Comics

 Thursday, October 16, 2008. 7:30 pm,
Kelly Lecture Hall

The Fall program of the Friends of the Goucher College Library was a fascinating look at the history of American cartoon art.  Jenny Robb, a professor and associate curator at the Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, discussed Bill Blackbeard, the founder of the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art.

Blackbeard founded the San Francisco Academy of Art in 1968 to collect materials being discarded by libraries worldwide. His immense collection consists of 2.5 million clippings, tearsheets, and comic sections spanning the years of 1894 to 1996.
