The Goucher College Library adheres to US Copyright Law Title 17 of the U. S. Code and when appropriate, applies Section 107 (Fair Use).
This service is to seek permission for using content | post copyrighted works in Canvas. If new content / material is needed, we must first obtain the material, then if applicable, seek permission for use in the classroom.
TIPS
Before posting course readings under Modules or Files, please be sure you are authorized to share. Items you have used in a previous class, used for research, or obtained via Interlibrary Loan (ILL), are often not eligible for sharing with your students.
Items you may share - copyright permission is not required for:
o lecture notes, sample exams, study guides and other materials you have created.
o full text of articles or contents of eBooks available in the Goucher Library catalog.
§ Please post the “permanent link” for items from our Catalog. Posting the PDF does not allow us to capture usage statistics used to make collection development decisions, and their structure makes them less accessibility friendly.
GETTING STARTED
Utilizing Copyright Clearance Center Marketplace, an E-commerce site for purchasing rights to use copyrighted materials, our library can facilitate the use of protected content, allowing you to post the work(s) in Canvas.
1. Instructors should email circ@goucher.edu or submit a request form
o Your class details: name of course | number of students
o The full citation of the article or book chapter
o The duration of use: semester & year needed - eg. Fall 2025, Sp 2026
2. Library staff will
o submit a request to CCC Marketplace and pay any applicable fees
o retain a record of each request
o notify the instructor of the outcome of the request and share the permission terms for approved requests
3. Instructors upload the file(s) to Canvas
TIP You may rename files to match the title as listed on your syllabus
§ In Modules – use the options icon (three dots) to Edit the title of the document
§ In Files – Use the Options icon (three dots) to Rename the title of the document
1. Find the item in the Catalog
2. Locate the Permalink (usually found by clicking the text / icon PERMALINK, SHARE, EMBED or STABLE, depending on the page). Copy it to your clipboard.
Please be mindful that the location of the permalink appears in different places based on the source. Additionally, JSTOR items, for example, have both a stable URL and a permalink. JSTOR’s permalink is found under Item Details – always use the permalink when provided.
3. Open your Canvas course and go to MODULES or wherever you want to post the material and add an external URL.
4. Click the “+” icon next to the module to add an item. (Use the “+Module” icon at
the top of the page if you need to create a new module.)
5. From the dropdown, select “External URL”
6. Paste the Permalink in the “URL” box (See special note below about proxy prefix)
7. Enter the title of the source in the “Page Name” box
8. Check the box to “Load in new tab”
9. Click “Add Item” to complete the process.
Special Note Proxy Prefix: If the Permalink does not include the Goucher prefix “https://goucher.idm.oclc.org/login?url=” you will need to add this prefix for the link to work off campus.
For example, in the text box where the URL goes, change the original url from http://www.jstor.org/action/showAdvancedSearch, to https://goucher.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/action/showAdvancedSearch.
Remember, some resources may already have the Goucher proxy, or an iteration of it in the URL. No need to affix this second proxy URL in such instances.
o Use of copyrighted material in subsequent semesters may require a new permission. View the Publisher’s Terms and Conditions associated with the source to determine if extended use is permitted.
o Resubmit your request to circ@goucher.edu if the usage period has expired.
Our staff is willing to post library links to your course page in Canvas. To permit this, please assign the eReserves librarian a “Designer” role so that we can edit your course content. The librarian for eReserves is adassa.williams@goucher.edu.
