How to Upload to Modules
1. Find the item in the Catalog
2. Locate the Permalink (usually found by clicking the text / icon PERMALINK, SHARE, EMBED or STABLE, depending on the page). Copy it to your clipboard.
Please be mindful that the location of the permalink appears in different places based on the source. Additionally, JSTOR items, for example, have both a stable URL and a permalink. JSTOR’s permalink is found under Item Details – always use the permalink when provided.
3. Open your Canvas course and go to MODULES or wherever you want to post the material and add an external URL.
4. Click the “+” icon next to the module to add an item. (Use the “+Module” icon at the top of the page if you need to create a new module.)
5. From the dropdown, select “External URL”
6. Paste the Permalink in the “URL” box (See special note below about proxy prefix)
7. Enter the title of the source in the “Page Name” box
8. Check the box to “Load in new tab”
9. Click “Add Item” to complete the process.
Special Note Proxy Prefix: If the Permalink does not include the Goucher prefix “https://goucher.idm.oclc.org/login?url=” you will need to add this prefix for the link to work off campus.
For example, in the text box where the URL goes, change the original url from http://www.jstor.org/action/showAdvancedSearch, to https://goucher.idm.oclc.org/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/action/showAdvancedSearch.
Remember, some resources may already have the Goucher proxy, or an iteration of it in the URL. No need to affix this second proxy URL in such instances.
Aside from materials you've created (syllabi, assignments, lectures, etc.), you may want to provide access to other materials, such as course readings, videos, and the like. Please be aware that copyright still applies; not every use, even in a course, is a "fair use." See the table below for more details, but basically, here is what you can post:
Type of material |
What you can do |
Don't |
Articles or book chapters from library databases or from trusted digital or preprint repositories such as ArXiv | Link to them | Put pdfs of the articles in Canvas |
Copyrighted articles or book chapters you or someone else have scanned or downloaded or gotten through ILL |
Ask the library to make sure you have or to get you legal copies and to secure copyright permission and, if received, then you can upload them but wtih these conditions: 1. Time: permissions typically are only for one semester, so you must request new permissions to use for any subsequent semesters. 2. Limited quantity: only use one article from a journal issue or 1-2 book chapters (no more than 10% of the book) |
Put them in Canvas if they are not legal copies or if permission has not been secured. |
Publicly-available websites | Link to them | Copy and paste material from the website into Canvas |
E-books owned or licensed by the library | Link to them (be aware that some e-books are licensed for one or a small number of users and others have unlimited concurrent users) | Upload the book or parts of it |
Print books or e-books you personally own, including textbooks | You could put a print book on reserve in the library, but you cannot put it in Canvas nor can you link to an e-book you personally own | Put it in Canvas |
Audio file from a library database | Link to it | Upload the audio file into Canvas |
Other audio file | Upload an excerpt of no more than 30 seconds, unless you have gotten permission, or link to an audio file online (although watch out for the many websites that violate copyright) | Upload the whole audio file unless you have gotten permission |
Video file from a library database | Link to it | Upload the video file into Canvas |
Other video file | Upload an excerpt of no more than 10% or 3 minutes, whichever is less, or link to a video online (although watch out for the many websites that violate copyright) | Upload the whole video file unless you have gotten permission |
Images from a library database | Link to them | Upload the images into Canvas, unless our license specifically allows that |
Images found on the web | Link to them (although watch out for the many websites that violate copyright) | Upload the images into Canvas |
