Non-profit and Cultural Institution Management

This guide offers resources and tips to support navigating roles in non-profits and cultural institutions.

Will I Really Have to Research?

TLDR: Absolutely!

Non-profits and cultural institutions like museums and libraries rely heavily on research even more so than for-profit businesses. In these fields, you will conduct market research so you can:

  • effectively identify and connect with potential clients and supporters;
  • understand the needs and behaviors of the population(s) your agency serves;
  • secure funding with fact and data-backed grant proposals;
  • advocate for law and policy change;
  • stay abreast of trends in non-profits and cultural institutions as well as
  • understand trends in the field your agency serves.

Since non-profits and cultural institutions serve myriad populations, there's no easy,  one-stop shop for all things research, so folks in this industry have to work hard to hone global and inclusive research skills which are applicable across disciplines and careers.

Scenario

In this scenario, I'm assuming the role of 'Community Outreach Manager' at a local non-profit that supports displaced LGBTQ Youth. Our organization offers transitional/ temporary housing for kids and teens until they are placed with a supportive family. We would like to add a small library and queer culture center in our building for the residents to engage and feel inspired, but we need money. What to do...
