Outcomes, Competencies, and Artifacts

 

Outcome Competency Artifact
Intentional Observations Students identify and inventory current social problems including systemic forms of oppression.  A rough thesis or proposal that clearly demonstrates an understanding that a systemic problem exists, the impact that problem has on a specified group, and a willingness to examine that problem through a disciplinary lens.  
Intersectional Interactions Students engage with members of the identified group to learn more about how the group perceives and experiences forms of oppression.
  • Revised thesis or proposal
  • Documentation on their interactions. Written reflection including names or pseudonyms, and what the student learned from the interaction. 
Informed Discovery Students collect a variety of sources and information resources across media, and that represents multiple perspectives on the identified problem. Must include multiple sources produced by individuals or groups from within the community being investigated.  Annotated bibliography with a focus on analyzing the content producers authority and position to the problem and proposed needs/ solutions/ desired outcomes. 
Impartial Analysis Students review, compile, and identify connections or divergents across the data and information from all sources. Comprehensive literature review embodying multiple perspectives surrounding the identified population and problem/ need
Inclusive Judgments Students solicit feedback on their writing from members of the community they're investigating as well as scholars or practitioners in their field. 
  • Copy of or access to the documents reviewed by 'experts'.
  • Revised document extending ideas from literature review, and identifying potential solutions or outcomes to the thesis. Incorporates revision suggestions from expert reviews. 
Innovative Transmissions Students propose multiple information products, and ultimately produce one that shares the information and knowledge they've acquired/ generated. Proposed transmissions and the final deliverable should clearly reflect the students understanding of the populations need and how they are most likely to find and use the information; as well as the best types of information products or mediums that will reach and potentially influence the individuals and groups responsible for (able to exact) taking action toward a proposed solution or outcome. 
  • Brief proposal identifying at least two products. 
  • Final deliverable examples: 
    • Poster presentation
    • Article or chapter for publication
    • White Paper
    • Grant Proposal 
    • Conference quality presentation
