i-Literacy is a research and teaching process that follows what is called the 'information lifecycle' from conceptualizing an information need or idea to producing and sharing information with a broad reach. The difference between this model and other search, research, and information literacy models is the deliberation with which each step addresses and supports engaging with diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice initiatives. Let's take a look at each step:

Intentional Observations
As you begin your research, take stock of social, political, academic, and professional environments through a culturally competent lens.
Intersectional Interactions
Before and during your search process, engage with marginalized groups and perspectives so you can willingly and openly acknowledge where their voices have authority. This is especially important when your research focuses on and/ or benefits these groups.
Informed Discovery
You are able to articulate the information need as it relates both to you and to other groups. You navigate information resources guided by myriad social and cultural perspectives that will lead to relevant, comprehensive and just results or answers.
Impartial Analysis
Now that you have a variety of resources and ideas, it's time to examine the data and information through a culturally competent lens, and with a willingness to challenge the status quo and outdated systems of suppression.
Inclusive Judgments
You've compiled and synthesized existing information, and now you must extend and develop your own ideas. As you do so, make value judgments based on the quality, reliability, transferability, and applicability of information as it appeals to myriad, diverse groups.
Innovative Transmissions
You've created something new and worth sharing. As you contribute to the body of knowledge in your field, be sure to create, share and advocate information in such a way to support equity, inclusion, and social justice.
