Research Process

Steps to an effective research project.

One of the first steps to starting your research is making sure you're ready to start gathering information.  Make sure you have a good system in place for organizing your information.

File Naming tips:

  • Create names that are less than 25 characters
  • Use underscores_or_dashes-instead-of-spaces
  • Avoid special characters
  • Use YYYYMMDD or YYYY-MM-DD for dates
  • Use leading zeros so numbered documents sort correctly (01, 02, 10, 11...or 001, 002, 010, 100)
  • Don't use the file names assigned by computer (Doc1, Doc4)
  • Use more than one attribute (date, topic, course, etc.)
  • Use descriptive words, avoid articles (the, a) and conjunctions (and, to)
  • Add tags to indicate versions or edits (V1, V2, _crop, _bw, _EMJ-edits)
Be consistent!
