Born in Steventon, England on December 16, 1775, Jane Austen belonged to a large family with six brothers and her sister Cassandra, who was her closest friend and confidante. There is much speculation about Jane Austen's life because when she died, her sister Cassandra burned many of Jane's letters and personal papers. Jane Austen died on July 18, 1817, before she was able to complete her last novel, Sandition.
Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were published together posthumously in 1818 and included a "Biographical Notice of the Author" written by Jane Austen's brother, Henry.
