In 1975, Alberta Hirshheimer Burke, a 1928 alumna, bequeathed her collection of over 1,000 volumes by and related to Jane Austen and her times to Goucher College. For more than 45 years, Alberta Burke built a world-class Jane Austen Collection with great care and perseverance. In edition to first and early volumes, the collection also includes rare period publications and Alberta Burke's own notebooks of Austen-related ephemera and correspondence with Austen collectors and scholars. Through funding provided by the Burkes and donations from members of the community, the collection has grown to over 2,000 volumes and 100 linear feet of manuscript and archival records. The collection also includes the official records of the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA).
