Jane Austen Collection

A short research guide to some of the resources found in Special Collections and Archives related to Jane Austen.

Overview of the Collection

The Jane Austen Collection is one of Goucher College’s most significant research collections. It includes first editions of each of Austen’s six novels, translations in over 40 languages, and materials relating to Jane Austen’s contemporaries and the Regency period in which she lived. The collection began when Henry and Alberta Hirshheimer Burke donated their collection to the library in 1975. In 1998, Barbara Winn Adams added over 275 volumes to the collection. Through funding provided by the Burkes and donations from various members of the community, the collection continues to grow.

This LibGuide provides a place to start when researching with the Jane Austen Collection at Goucher College. Though there are many additional materials in the Main Collection, the focus is on the materials located in Special Collections and Archives. There are many items in the collection not covered, but this guide attempts to highlight some of the most useful sources in each category.
